The Challenge

Founded in 1992, with three teachers and 60 students, The Immigrant Learning Center has grown into a nationally recognized resource for immigrant education. Decades of growth created an extraordinary body of resources and tools — and a website that was hard to manage and even harder to navigate.

The Solution

Our work centered on simplifying and creating better user experience. We clarified the site’s structure, redesigned key pathways, and determined page goals.  Rather than rebuilding the site from scratch, we focused on restructuring what already existed — creating systems that could scale with the organization.

A Robust and Intuitive Resource Hub

The Resource Hub is one of the most content-heavy areas of the site, and the new structure makes it feel simple, logical, and searchable. The redesigned Resource Hub allows educators and students to:

  • Filter by topic, level, and keyword
  • Navigate structured content collections
  • Find relevant resources quickly and intuitively

By shifting to structured collections, content is more organized, easier to edit, and scalable long-term, ensuring that staff can maintain these areas with little-to-no technical assistance from us.

A Mission-Driven Strategic Design

We designed a homepage that clearly communicates ILC’s mission while guiding users toward next steps — whether enrolling in classes, exploring research, or accessing educator resources.

Creating Accessibility for Adult Learners

We had to carefully consider how non-English-speaking users would interact with the website and ensure that everything was easy to translate and straightforward at each step. Adult learners need information that is clear, accessible, and direct. We structured the “English Classes” section in a way that removes barriers: class options, schedules, registration steps, and next actions are easy to find and easy to understand. And translation functionality is highlighted on the registration page for free English language classes. The target audience primarily accesses the site via mobile devices, so we ensured that all pages were optimized for mobile and responsive. Text, images, menus, and forms adapt smoothly without losing clarity or hierarchy.

Clear Design that Builds Trust Across All Devices

The new design uses consistent typography, clean grid structure, and supportive photography that reflect ILC’s mission and celebrate the amazing immigrants who have gone through their program and helped shape this country.  The result is a website that feels trustworthy, clear, and usable — supporting learners, educators, researchers, and donors alike.
